Paul is Dead: Grungy-Punk Duo Feels the Pressure of This Bummer Summer

Written by Sean Tanner

PAUL IS DEAD TRIES TO MAKE YOUR SUMMER A LITTLE FUNNER.

It’s hard not to feel like this summer is a dud for obvious reasons, but if you’re looking for something aggressive but fun and also kind of nostalgic, Paul is Dead’s three-song EP, Bummer Summer, is great for blasting with the car windows down with a few of your buds. The world is fucked, the club scene is dead, and our circles have shrunk. It’s time to get weird.

Full of reverb-laden guitar, clattering, raucous drums, and howling, ripping vocals, the EP sounds like a cassette your friend might have popped into the deck of your beat-up Honda Accord on your way to the lake sometime in the early to mid-90s.

The opening track, “Get It”, is a great rebuff of people who are getting on your nerves with constant grumbling, one we can all appreciate, because who amongst us hasn’t had at least one relationship, platonic or otherwise, put under strain this year? This makes way for “Pressure”, a gloomier, assailing track that closes with some fantastic anguished shouts. Lastly, “The End” is a great tongue in cheek ride made to be hollered along with your friends, and is probably our favourite song of the trio.

So crack a cold one, call some friends and let Paul is Dead turn your Bummer Summer into a Funner Summer.

Bummer Summer is available on all streaming platforms.
